Can the Arts Learn (from Sports)?

Has art always been quite so cool as it came to be in the 20th century? (And we don’t mean the good kind of cool.)

There’s a new online conversation worth tapping into, a group blog (and more) built around a forthcoming book Engaging Art: The Next Great Transformation of America’s Cultural Life.

Just to whet your appetite, listen to the brief audio file in which Lynne Conner, who is also one of the essayists, comments on the culture surrounding contemporary sports. Conner just about suggests that arts folk should aim for the same kind of interactive, textured experience.

Our arts-presenting institutions are finding themselves more than a little out-of-synch and audience challenged. What’s the next arts landscape going to look like? This project appears to be a very likely glimpse of that future.
